Lecture: The Greek War of Independence of 1821 in Art: Heroes for an Hour?

On the occasion of the national holiday of 25 March, the SNFCC is organizing a series of specially designed events for children and adults, illuminating aspects of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and exploring, not only its heritage but, most importantly, our own relationship with it, almost two hundred years later. There will be many opportunities to rethink the meaning and impact of that period.

This lecture discusses the overall influence of the Greek War of Independence in art, particularly on philhellene artists, such as the French romantics Eugène Delacroix and Théodore Gericault, or the artists of the School of Munich. Also discussed will be how this heroic era is represented in the works of important Greek artists, such as the folk artist Theophilos, or the poet George Seferis.
